Trade: ZTE sanctions have bipartisan support in House [Politico, The Hill]

May 17, 2018

On the subject of the US-China trade dispute, and Chinese firm ZTE, which makes both cel phones and “big” infrastructure equipment for global phone and cable companies.

It turns out that the aggressive trade posture is not coming exclusively from the Trump Administration, the executive branch, or Republicans.

Today the House Appropriations Committee (list of members) unanimously passed an amendment to an unrelated bill, locking in the ZTE sanctions.

“This amendment would prevent the Commerce Department from renegotiation of the sanctions it just enacted last month on ZTE” – according to Rep. Ruppersberger (D-Md). He’s referring to Trump’s tweet that he is considering undoing the sanctions as part of larger trade negotiations.

Support for strategic use of trade restrictions to prevent tech transfer to China is found in Congress, and is bipartisan. This suggests that these difficult issues are likely to outlive Trump presidency, however short or long it may be.
