On US military expansion in Africa [Nick Turse / Democracy Now]
Caught the end of this segment on the way home today in the car.
Nick Turse and Amy Goodman discuss the US counter-terrorism missions in Africa. An estimated 6000 US troops operating in dozens of countries. Typically beginning as training and recon/advisory role. Provocations from extremist groups instigate drone strikes and result in collateral damage to civilians, thereby multiplying the numbers of extremists. The cycle of escalation seems to follow the familiar pattern seen elsewhere in the Middle East in the past 15 years. Largely ignored in US news reporting until recently.
