Perez selected as next DNC chairman
Tom Perez, former Labor Secretary under Pres. Obama, is voted the next DNC chair. Keith Ellison as vice-chair.
Despite calls for “unity”, the vote is viewed as a proxy replay of the summer 2016 Clinton vs Sanders DNC. I think this view is accurate.
I see Perez’s selection as another disappointment from the national D party. If not a full-on snub of the grassroots/left/progressive wing, it is certainly a missed opportunity to own up to the disaster of the 2016 DNC.
In practical terms, it means the Sanders wing of the party, which in my view represents the realistic path to avoid a repeat of 2016 in 2020, must now work mainly at the state and local level. Hopefully without having to fight the national party every step of the way. I think the only way to avoid having to fight the national D party every step of the way is for there to be a viable third-party alternative (Green etc) waiting in the wings as a backup.
The “Inside-Outside” strategy, as I’ve said before. Round and round we go.
