German state elections: centrists reduced, right-wingers gain

March 14, 2016

Not really the focus of my blog, but interesting to see the parallels in Europe. Germany’s right wing “Alternative for Deutschland” party, running on anti-immigrant, anti-Euro sentiments, were the gainers, getting 12-24% in 3 major state elections, taking votes away from the more centrist Christrian Democrats and Social Democrats.

In Germany, the system for counting votes and turning that into representation has a different structure, compared to the US, so they get to pick from a more diverse menu of politically realistic voting choices vs our de-facto two party system. Despite this, the trends are similar to what is happening here.
